Hartford Civic Center

Hartford Wolfpack - American Hockey League

Hartford, CT

his was the home of the Hartford Whalers, so the Civic Center has the feel of an old NHL arena. One of the nice things is that the Civic Center is it is in a mall, so you aren't outside waiting for the doors to open.

For an AHL arena, the Civic Center is a bit on the large side, so the atmosphere isn't wonderful. Ticket prices ($22 for the lower level) are a bit high compared to other AHL arenas. The Civic Center is currently undergoing renovations and we have not been back for quite some time.

Parking: There are a number of $7 parking lots around the arena within a short walking distance.

Camera policy: Although it clearly states that cameras are not allowed in the arena, I had no problem hiding my camera under my jersey. When in the arena, I saw at least a dozen cameras or so. The security guard I was standing next to even complimented me on my camera.

Food: The food in Hartford is adequate at best. The pizza we had was overdone and the pretzel was average. Prices, even for an arena, are pretty high.

*Restaurant Recommendations: City Steam Brewery/Cafe (942 Main St) is a very good brewpub within a 5 minute walk from the arena. The food at City Steam is very good and the beer is even better. We enjoyed the French onion soup, Brew House Meatloaf and Fish & Chips. The pot roast is also excellent and the brick-fired pizzas look very good. If you are with a large party, you can get a beer bong for $20 which contains 3 liters of any beer. Their Norwegian Wood (winter seasonal) beer is excellent, which is spiced with a touch of cinnamon and Dutch cocoa! Just don't be startled when you hear the loud antique brass steam whistle that the bartender blows when a tip is left!

Agave Grill (100 Allyn Street) is directly across the street from the arena and is phenomenal. If tequila is your preferred drink of choice, Agave is for you with their large selection of various sipping tequilas (over 30). The margaritas are phenomenal, including the Chambord margarita. The guacamole (prepared freshly at your table) is excellent as were the enchiladas (we highly recommend the chorizo enchiladas).
